Soror Betty Noakes is a member of the Chi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She was born in Oklahoma City and is the mother of Michelle Noakes and the widow of Richard E. Noakes. Her husband was a professor and counselor at Rose State College and died while serving our country on active duty.
Betty graduated from Douglass High School in Oklahoma City and then attended Oklahoma City University for two years. She completed her undergraduate education at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Physical and Recreation. Betty later obtained her master’s degree in Elementary Education from Oklahoma City University.
In 1972 Betty joined the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. through the graduate Chi Zeta Chapter. She has contributed to the chapter in many capacities. Betty has served as First Anti Basileus, Chaplain, Chair of La Cheerio, and is one of the original members of Chi Zeta’s Stork’s Nest. She has also served with the March of Dimes endeavor, Finer Womanhood Committee, and chair of the Blue and White Ball held at Tinker Air Force Base for 3 years. She was chairman of the Midwestern Region Scrapbook committee for 3 years and became a Life Member in June 26, 2000. Soror Noakes was selected Zeta of the Year for 2000-2001 and received the Clara Luper Service Appreciation and Achievement Award on August 20, 2005. Betty has attended many state, Midwestern Regional conferences and national Boule’s serving as a delegate.
Betty is a member of Quayle United Methodist Church where she has served as chair of the Stewardship Committee and is a member of the United Methodist Woman’s Group.
Soror Noakes taught elementary education in the Merced Public School System in California. She has also taught in the Oklahoma City Public School and Mid-Del Public School Systems, where she retired. She was also a Certified Recreational Therapeutic Specialist where she served as Director of Recreational Therapy at the former Lahoma Rehabilitation Hospital in Oklahoma City. She is the former owner of “I Care-Day Care, Inc.”
Betty has many other accomplishments as well. She has been listed in “Who’s Who Among American Teachers” in 1990, “Who’s Who in American Education”, and “The International Who’s Who of Entrepreneurs”. She is a member of the Oklahoma Retired Teacher’s Association, Oklahoma Education Association, and National Education Association. She is a charter member of the Smithsonian Institutes’ National Museum of the American Indian and African Americans and participated as a guest at the USA Army War College 53rd Annual National Security Seminar in June 2007.
Soror Noakes is a member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., where she was the past dean for new members. Also, she was selected as Soror of the Year, Southwest Regional Soror of the Year, April 3, 2005 and National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Epsilon Chapter Soror of the Year, May 28, 2005. She is a member of The Urban League and The Urban League Guild, NAACP, Order of Eastern Star, Order of the Golden Circle, Daughters if Isis, Leberta R. Glover Court #48 (Heroines of Jericho), International Biographical Association (Life Member), Albert Lee Powell Sr. Oklahoma State Grand Assembly, Oklahoma Council of Deliberation April 28, 2012. She was a Loyal Lady of the Year, ALARAF Court #69, Daughter of the Year, December 12, 2006.
