Soror Clara McFall was born May 15, 1905 in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was the daughter of Reverend Willis D. and Ellen B. Johnson. Her brother was also a minister, Reverend William P. Johnson.
She attended Douglass High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and graduated in 1923. Afterwards, Clara attended Wiley College in Marshall, Texas and graduatedin 1927 with a major in elementary education. While attending Wiley College, Clara joined the Theta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
On January 2, 1935, Ms. Johnson married George McFall who preceded her in death. In Oklahoma City, December 12, 1936 she joined four other women to charter the Chi Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Soror McFall was the third chapter president of the Chi Zeta chapter.
Soror McFall was a dedicated member of Quayle United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City, holding the honor of being the longest continuous member at the time of her death. She taught for 41 years at Dunbar Elementary before retiring in 1970. During her teaching career, Soror McFall encouraged and assisted many students to enroll in and complete college.
Clara was a very involved community leader and role model. She was a member of the McFarland YWCA, Urban League, NAACP, PTA, OEA, Girl Scouts and Professional Woman’s Club. She was the first African American woman and teacher ever permitted to serve as a juror in Oklahoma City.
On December 31, 1997 Mrs. McFall earned her wings and became a Triumphant Soror. She was honored with a Zeta Burial Memorial Service on January 3, 1998 under the direction of McKay-Davis Funeral Home.
